Preserve Description

Hathaway Preserve at Ross Run features a spectacular gorge with waterfalls, reef fossils, exposed bedrock and vertical cliffs as high as 75 feet. Ross Run gorge is a unique geological feature shaped by the region’s deglaciation. Diverse cliffside micro-habitats line its steep sides. From a trail running along the top of the gorge, visitors can enjoy the sights and sounds of the creek below.

The surrounding woods feature mature oaks, some with trunks over four feet in diameter. In springtime, the understory’s colorful wildflower display includes snow trillium, Dutchman’s breeches and spring beauty. The preserve provides habitat for a variety of wildlife, including birds such as the red-bellied woodpecker, red-eyed vireo, sedge wren and Henslow’s sparrow.
