Nature
Preserve
North of Atwood in Kosciusko County. From Fort Wayne
(I-69 exit 109B) take US 30 northwest around Columbia City and Warsaw to
700W. Turn right (north) onto 700W, take it to its end at
650N and straight into the lane in front of you. If the blue gate on the
lane is closed, park at the gate and walk to the preserve. If the
blue gate is open, drive on in to the interior parking lot. Driving distance from I-69 to the preserve is 48-½ miles.
38-acres in size, Glennwood was a gift from Steve and
Lynn Hossler in 2003. The preserve is named for Glenn Manwarren, who
loved nature and introduced Steve to it.
Dedication through IDNR's Division of Nature Preserves
is pending.
Willet's Lake is the outstanding feature at the preserve. When the
drainage for the lake was changed in the 1930s, the lake became a
circumneutral bog, which means it is not acidic or alkaline - it is
neutral in pH.
One of ACRES most colorful and beautiful preserves in fall, the preserve
has red maple, black cherry, and tamarack trees. The bog is lined with
poison sumac (warning), which turns a brilliant scarlet in October. The
bog itself is covered
with cattails, sphagnum moss and a variety of plants, including red osier
dogwood.
Glennwood is on the Heritage Register, meaning the IDNR Division of Nature
Preserves considers it an important ecological site and worthy of
protection. The preserve will become a state dedicated nature preserve in
the future.
The woods has Canadian mayflower (only ACRES preserve for species),
sarsaparilla (only ACRES preserve for species), and ferns: cinnamon,
sensitive, royal, ebony spleenwort, Christmas, and other species.
