Detering Nature Preserve

Northeast of Kendallville in Noble County. From Fort Wayne travel north on I-69 to exit 134 (SR 6/Waterloo). Turn left (west) on SR 6 and travel about 10 miles to Kendallville. In town turn right at Kemmerer Road (700N) and immediately look for the ACRES preserve parking on your left. Driving distance from I-69/I-469 to the preserve is 29-½ miles.

Esther Detering gifted these 50 acres in 1986.  A loop trail and trails leading to the lake and to a nearby neighborhood.

The Detering farm was a "Green Grocer" farm for the Kendallville area, raising many kinds of vegetables for markets.  The farm fields are slowly regenerating to hardwood forest and deer are a common sight.  Wetlands edge the shoreline of Round Lake with shrubby cinquefoil, red osier dogwood and wild iris.  In spring, an abundance of delicate redbud trees crown tall sedges and cattails.
